Anxiety In A Hospital Workplace Setting

A Reader Asks This Question:

I am a registered nurse and have experienced some really hostile work environments in the past. I now find myself, feeling terrorized about moving forward in my career or returning to nursing. I am good with people, just not the bull S***.

1. I saw an RN spit on a LPN. Twice! I was harrassed for months about this situation.
2. Scrubs hiding sponges during procedures
3. Supervisors getting in peoples faces, saying you are so f*****.
4. When mistakes are made, no accountibility.

Now, I find myself doing very unprofessional things: Like, I walked out of a job and never went back, not like me at all. Or, the inability to commit to a job.

I have talked to professionals, have tried medications, tried positive thinking, and can’t seem to get over the fear….

Has anyone ever experienced this? Any advice?

Document everything that goes on, but wait until you get home to do it. Start reading your employee manual. You want to look for things like “all employees will treat each other with respect”. If that rule is being broken, it’s ammunition.

Study the disciplinary process, how it’s SUPPOSED to be handled and make note when the person doing the yelling is not following the rules.

What you want to do is establish a pattern of abuse.

If it gets so bad, then get medical attention and file a worker’s comp claim to protect you from getting fired.

Here’s an idea for something that might interest you, working for an insurance company out in the field doing home visits for pre-life insurance applications. Earlier this year I changed life insurance policies and they sent a person out to take my BP, weight me, and just ask some general health questions. She said she loved her job.

Apply for work at a doctor’s office and get out of that hospital environment.

First let me say that I feel your anquish and that in the world of health care your patients are counting on you to be at your best all the time. In my opinion that is the kind of stress you can only resolve if you are both doing your best… along with a team of professionals that are doing thier best as well.

I think you will be able to put your fear aside when the job are at has severeral aspects that seem to be lacking in your recent experiance.

1 You are doing work you do well and like.
2 The team you work with is supportive, and strives for execellence.
3 That you start within your comfort range and ablility to provide the care and or service that the job requires.

I have seen nurses that can not work in a hospital or with patients, that could work in the insurance, home heath care or administration. I know a nurse that gave up for similar reasons and is a professional photographer today.

Drugs, and positive thinking do not change a bad situation. You are in my opinion quite right not to work in an unheathy environment. Stick to your principles! Find a group that fits your ethical view. Don’t settle for a life that is stressed out because you can’t function with disfunctional workplace.

Best of luck! Have a great life…
