Can I Collect Unemployment and Still Work Part-time?

I recently found an independent contractor position doing promotional work that will be temporary (for the summer). It will be between 2 and 15 hours per week and its not guaranteed work. Am I still able to collect unemployment as I have paid into it for the first half of this year (and 2 yrs before that)?

Answer:  You did not pay anything into unemployment, your employer did.  Unemployment insurance is not withheld from your paycheck.  Unemployment benefits are a percentage of how much you’ve earned in the previous x number of months, so whatever you earned 2 years ago doesn’t matter.  I suggest going online to your state’s unemployment website and read up on it.

I would like to correct one thing that is mentioned in your question. You state, "as I have paid into it for the first half of this year (and 2 yrs before that)?

Technically, the employee does not pay into the unemployment fund. Your employer pays into this fund based on their tax rate and your total wages for the year.

you need to report your income from the self employment as you make your weekly claim

In most States ( if not all of them ) you will receive a Claim Form to fill out and return; on the front of the Claim Form is a section to list ANY wages earned, no matter where or who from; these wages will be deducted from the benefit check you receive; not declaring those wages is considered fraud and is punishable by law ( look at the bottom of the Form for more info )
