Emergeny Medical Technician: Pregnancy Discrimination in Illinois

I just found out I’m pregnant. Per my company handbook I am required to tell my management ASAP due to the physical labor I do. (I’m an EMT) So I did. I was told I had 7 days to get medical clearance from a doc to be able to continue to work . I have called everywhere and no one can see me until the end of Jan 2011. When I informed my HR of this I was told that I needed to take a LOA. But per my co handbook since I’m NOT a full time employee( I was hired as full time about a year ago but 2 months ago my hours were cut due to business being slow) and I’m pregnant, I’m not eligible for a LOA. What can my company due? I offered to do other positions at my company that I am completely qualified to due ( they have put other pregnant women in these positions due to their pregnancy)but was told those positions are no longer available!? Now I am being told that my only option is taking a LOA or quitting! I’m lost Help me PLEASE!

One Response to Emergeny Medical Technician: Pregnancy Discrimination in Illinois

  • If you are required to tell your employer ASAP, seems to be that you wouldn’t be far enough along in your pregnancy too be concerned about physical restrictions and that 7-day window, so early on in your condition, is unrealistic and seems like a smoke screen to force pregnant workers out. You can get a free consultation with an: employment law attorney to find out.
