HIPPA/Employment law violation. Where do I report it to?

My coworker was recently let go from the medical group she worked for. Her supervisor had on numerous occasions looked into her medical records to see if she had infact gone to the doctor and looked at what she was seen for ( we work for a large medical group she also doctors at). The supervisor got a 3 day without pay slap on the wrist. I am wondering who she can report this to outside the company. I feel this medical info was used against her and got her fired. How would she get someone to investigate this?

Thank you for any help you guys can give.

Answer:  She can report HIPPA violations here:  http://www.hhs.gov/ocr/privacy/hipaa/complaints/index.html  She should also click here to find an employment law attorney to help with the case.  She better have her documentation in order of how it all played out.  Click here to learn how to document problems at work.

If SHE, not you, wants to contact an attorney she can. A true violation could net her A LOT of money, and would more than likely be settled out of court since the supervisor already got hit for it.

as a supervisor in a large corp. I had a print out each month of how many sick leave hours each employee took off. Her super could not go to a doc. and see if she was there or what for. She probably got fired for abusing sick leave–a stranger cannot access med records or reasons to be there.
If you are dealing with a large medical corp. they will have a retained staff of lawyers, here’s hoping your friend can find a litigation attorney to take on her case. Not to sound like gloom and doom but realism is a good thought.
