I Have Mean Boss. What Can I Do?
A Reader Asks This Question:
I just got a new job; there are two managers I work with, one is mean and the other is nice. The mean one seems like she can’t stand the sight of me…..when I walk into the room, she sighs really hard. She treats me like I’m slow…….She gets an attitude whenever I ask her a question….I have to admit that I DO ask a lot of questions….but it’s only because I’m new there and I want to be sure of what I’m doing….it’s really embarrasing because I don’t want ppl to think i’m stupid(she gets an attitude w/me in front of my co-workers) She’s nice to all of them, except for me. It’s really frustrating……..I’ve only been working there for about 2 weeks, but I really can’t be in the same room as her….she makes me do all the dirty work, when I was hired to be cashier. I don’t want to quit…but she makes me feel really awkward and excluded……what should I do BESIDES ‘ talking about it ‘?
Please help?

@Lee gives some excellent advice. I would like to add the following.
Does your work have performance reviews? If so, if this manager is going to be in a position to evaluate you, I have a feeling you’re going to come out on the losing end. Start planning for that day right now. You need to start documenting all the crazy bullshit this manager is dealing out. Click here to download myfree report. It will explain how to document and what you can do to get revenge. You MUST protect yourself.
Also, did anyone properly train you to perform your job to meet company expectations, cause it sure as heck isn’t going to happen by osmosis.
Why would this manager ignore you? Is it because you’re new or is there a deeper reason that could be discriminatory in nature? Like I said, download the free report.
Ok, you have said the magic first words. Have you TALKED to HER about these issues? If you feel that you can’t talk to HER, then perhaps talk to the OTHER manager. Express you feelings that the first manager is not giving you proper training and guidance. Give them examples of this.
Asking questions is NOT a bad thing. It is a GREAT thing! It shows you are willing to learn!
If you can’t talk with the second manager, then the next step would be to go to the employee relations/people services/human relations people and talk with them. Once again, do not give GENERIC examples, but give EXACT examples. your "She gets an attitude whenever I ask a question" might be better explained as "Whenver I ask a question Ms X begins to do this, this and this, which leads me to believe she is not taking my questions seriously."
if you have experienced times when "when I walk into the room, she sighs really hard. She treats me like I’m slow" and have seen the interactions with other staff where she does not do this, show these examples as well.
You might consider making notes of these issues, with dates, and times so that you can present your argument more convincingly.
