I just got laid off without any notice

I worked a the headquarters of a big food corporation for 6 weeks. It was a temporary position with an “unknown” period of time. I told my boss that if he cuts me, just to let me know about 2 weeks ahead, and he said that is what he usually does. I got the job through the company not a temp agency. Yesterday, which is Friday, 10 minutes before Im about to leave he calls me in his office and tells me thank you your job is over, here is your check. I was like, huh. I felt speechless that I didnt even ask for a reason. I get along with my coworkers and they were shock when I told them the news. I recieved no notice at all. Not too many people in my department like my boss, he is not caring, and does not have people skills. Just graduated college 2 months ago and now I am unemployed.

  • @Charles, getting laid off when you’re a good worker makes it all that much harder for both parties. However, you can be let go for any reason so long as it’s not an illegal reason.

  • Charles says:

I quit my job I was at for 2 years to go work for a new company (I am a Diesel Mechanic) for a full time job and more pay.
I was at this job for a month and a half, My new Boss told me there was a meeting 2 hours before my shift the next day, I went in that day for the meeting and they announced there would be some layoff, after the meeting I was called into the office and they told me I was a great employee but they had to lay me off. I have been unable to get unemployment through them because I was not there six months. I have Struggled finding a job since and I want to know is what they did legal?

  • You knew going into it that it was a temp position so don’t try to read things into it and turn it into something it was never meant to be. Yea, it sucks that he said he usually gives 2 weeks notice and then didn’t, but he’s not bound to it.
