Is this Race discrimination at work?

A Reader Asks This Question:

Hi

I work at the hospital. Recently, there was an opening position in my department. I asked my manager if she could hire my sister to work. My manager told me that she does not hire family members. Two weeks later she hired a sister of a co-worker of mine to fill in that opening position. This co-worker of mine is WHITE. I’m ASIAN. Is this race discrimination? Should I report my manager’s behavior to Human Resources? Should I just forget this whole thing and move on w/ my life? Please give me your honest opinions on what I should do. Thank you.

Should I confronted my manager on this issue before going to Human Resources? I would not report her to the Director of the department because I know he’ll be on her side.

Nevermind what your manager says, what does your company policy state about hiring family members? Is it spelled out in an employee manual? Some companies frown upon it, while others welcome it. Your manager cannot willy nilly make up her own rules when the company has a written policy. That I would bring up to HR. Start the conversation off by asking what company policy is about hiring family members. If they say there is none or that it’s already, then report what your manager said. But be prepared to back up why you think your sister would have made a great employee.

Also, did your sister actually apply for the job? She would have to apply and have been denied and then be able to prove that she was discriminated against. Discrimination laws not only apply to current employees, but to job applicants, too.
