Question about pregnancy discrimination and layoffs?

My company announced yesterday that my job would be moved to another location in another state “sometime between June 2010 and June 2011″ – leaving me jobless. My husband and I are currently trying to have a baby.

My question is this: If I were to get pregnant this year and deliver in late 2010 or early 2011 and they decide to lay me off before I deliver or right after, would that count as a type of pregnancy discrimination? I really want to have a baby very soon, but would fear that they would lay me off as soon as I told them I was pregnant. They’re known to be a very crooked organization and have been sued a few times before by former employees.

One Response to Question about pregnancy discrimination and layoffs?

  • Click Here for Work Laws Exposed - Instant DownloadCan your husband support you without your job? Does he have medical insurance? Common sense says that if you know you are going to lose your job soon, it might not be a good idea to get pregnant right now.

How does the company plan to lay people off, all at once when the time comes? If you were to tell them, “I’m pregnant” and then you get laid off very soon there after and no one else does, it sure as heck would look like pregnancy discrimination regardless of whether or not they had planned on doing it anyway. Why? Because you were singled out.

If it were me, I’d put off getting pregnant right now. However, should you decide to proceed anyway, you need to document everything so you can show that you got laid off because you were pregnant. Click here to learn how to document problems at work.
