Verbal Abuse, Discrimination At Work
This is my first time posting a question online, so I am not really sure how this works. Before I state my concern I want to give a little background information to help you understand my stance. I have been working in a retail store for about 4 months now and I have been constantly abused, mostly verbal. I have done some research about the applied laws in IL and I have stumbled upon couple that I believe were broken. (Please Note that this was a frequent occurrence). For instance if i was assigned a task and didn’t not meet their satisfaction, they would make comments like “You stupid pollack” or “your a pussy but not the kind of pussy i like”. What made it completely out of hand today and forced me to walk out during half of my shift is when I was denied my break after I worked 7 and half hours and still had another hour and half left. So my big question is: what action should I take to be compensated for all this abuse, or any action at all to be able to resolve this issue.

@Holly, at will employment means you can quit for any reason. The employer can let you go for any reason so long as it’s not an illegal reason. On the surface, I see nothing illegal. Unless you had a contract and either party violated it, there was no wrong doing.
I would start off by documenting everything that goes on and what gets said because you’re going to need proof. Download this free report “10 Things That Managers Do To Get Sued…And Lose In Court”.
You can file a claim with the EEOC for discrimination. Here are the various types of discrimination http://www.eeoc.gov/laws/types/index.cfm
As for not getting your break, file a complaint with your state’s labor board. Here’s a report about breaks. http://www.dol.gov/whd/state/rest.htm
