Why is “age discrimination” technically illegal in hiring, and how can I do it anyway?

Question:
Nothing against old people, but there’s no way my company’s health insurance plan could afford to handle more than a couple of them at a time.  Why is “age discrimination” technically illegal in hiring, and how can I do it anyway?

Given the financial realities to companies, why is age discrimination illegal, and how can I do it anyway, as an employer, without getting caught or getting in trouble?

I don’t want to hire people older than 50 or so, unless another of our old employees retires first.  Look, I’d hire them if we had national healthcare, but this is America, and we don’t.

Answer:

Federal age discrimination laws only applies to employers who have “twenty or more employees for each working day in each of twenty or more calendar weeks in the current or preceding calendar year, but state laws may vary.
