Women Earning Less – Sex discrimination?

Some research indicates that women’s earnings were 80% of men’s earnings. Other research shows that young women earn just 5% less than their male peers. The discrepancy seems to come in as women leave the workforce for domestic responsibilities (i.e. child and  elder care) and then seek to return. Is this truly sex discrimination or justifiable experience selection? Do you agree or disagree and why? Are there other factors at work here?
