Can You Get Government Jobs if You’re Over 35?

Age Discrimination in Government Jobs

Question:

I have been told from someone who used to work for the govt that ALL federal jobs require that you be under age 35 when you apply. I find this hard to believe since the govt enforces a “age discrimination” law to other employers, and many people have been laid off and would like the security of a govt job, not to mention that there are lots of open vacancies. (I know there are unfair preferences for vets and their wives, who can get hired even in their 60s. I’m talking “new hires”.) I also know there are some logical restrictions for prison guards and jobs that require youthful strength.

But for the typical office job, I can’t imagine that they’d prefer a hormonal and partying 18 year old instead of an experienced, responsible, “grown up” 30 something.

It sounds illegal, discriminating, and wrong. After 45, I could understand that you need 20 years to retire, but that is your own business if you work enough, not the govt’s.

Can anyone verify or disprove that the govt doesn’t hire people over 35, with evidence?

Answer:

The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission states there is a different claim process for federal workers. Click here to find out more about the claims process. http://www.eeoc.gov/federal/fed_employees/complaint_overview.cfm
