Is getting fired for long hair a definition of discrimination?
Question:
Alright, I know this is an old, obvious question asked by hundreds of people, but please read all of this before you jump in and say, “JUST CUT IT!” or something of that nature. I know, “Yes, it’s legal for them to fire you for your hair length.” But, my question is, how do people not see this as discrimination? It so blatantly IS. A woman can have her hair short, shaved, long, straight, curled, stripped, up, down, anyway she wants it, but a man can only have a short, “clean cut” hair style. That is an obvious example of discrimination. Some have told me, “No, because in some jobs, you have to wear a tie and girls don’t. Is that discrimination?” No, it’s not. Ties are CLOTHING, items you can put on and take off your body when you leave the workplace. My hair won’t grow back when I walk out the door. “Your hair grows back!” Yes, but I’m saying I’m not being allowed to grow it back if I have the job. Though I don’t really like “dress codes”, I don’t argue about them because I can change when I get off work. But hair should not be a part of the dress code. Hair is on your BODY. Clothing should only matter. That’s why it’s called a DRESS code. Anyway, I wanted to make a few valid points for some of the obvious things I can imagine people telling me. My question though, is, for those of you who thinks it’s not discriminatory to force a man to cut his hair off for a job, but allows a woman of the same job to have any hair she wishes? I don’t want to hear a bunch of nonsense like, “Don’t you know how hard jobs are to find?!?!? Just cut your hair!” I’m not here for that, I’m asking a simple question about the definition of discrimination. Thank you.
Answer:
Sounds like a Republican boss who refuses to get with the program. It’s old school. I don’t think long hair should matter if it is clean. Is it discriminatory? Yes. Is it illegal discrimination? Not unless there is a religous requirement to have long hair. Wonder what they would think if you wrapped you hair up under a short-styled wig. LOL
