Didn’t Get a Raise at Work – Discrimination?

So I work for a really shady company but even worse a I have a horrible boss who has no idea what she is doing. To make it short I show up to work every day on time and work very hard which people have complimented me on.

My boss is so horrible, two people with higher up jobs have quit in one month leaving us with a “team” that now consists of just me and her. So I have taken on the responsibilities of the people that left and I know for a fact they were paid triple what I make. I think the topper that really killed me is that I have never had a yearly review and she was supposed to conduct one with me but the worst part is literally everyone in the company received a raise except for me because my boss never sat me down to talk to me like she was supposed to. Is this a lawsuit? In a way I feel discriminated against because I have done everything right but why am I the only person in a company of 150 people that didn’t get a raise and why am I doing somebody’s job who was getting paid triple of what I make and no word of a raise or promotion? I am not one to whine nor do I believe really in lawsuits but this is not acceptable. While I hate my boss I am happy I have a job while I try to find another. Any legal help would be much appreciated.

I know that the whole company received a raise because my coworker, who is a good friend of mine and director, told me that the HR department sat down all of the directors and advised them everyone in the company will be getting raises and each director was instructed to sit down with their team and discuss their raise. I have discussed this issue with my boss and in response I receive an answer of “it’s just not in the budget,” which doesn’t make sense considering two people have quite.

Answer:  I don’t see any discrimination from what you’ve described.  Discrimination would be related to

  • Age
  • Disability
  • Equal Pay/Compensation
  • Genetic Information
  • National Origin
  • Pregnancy
  • Race/Color
  • Religion
  • Retaliation
  • Sex
  • Sexual Harassment

To me it just sounds like your boss is an ass.  So did you get a review?  Did you have any performance issues that needed addressing or something else that would have prevented you from getting a raise?

Do you have an employee manual?  Crack it open and start reading.  What you want to look for is stuff your boss is violating.  Then write it all up and submit it to HR.  Click here to learn how to document problems at work.
