Pay Discrimination At Work
At my job, I am not going to say where yet, I will say approximately 90% of the employees are black, I am not racist, I swear or I would not have applied there. We have 4 assistant managers, 2 are white, 2 are black and the general manager is black. Our general manager is a homosexual and so are a few other employees. I always get compliments on how well I do my job. Any way, here is my question:
When I was hired I was doing a job that was supposed to have a pay increase automatically and I never received one. This has been almost a year. Another guy was hired on a few months after me doing a job that started at minimum wage. He is black, I am white. I moved to the other job that payed minimum wage because I never received a raise. A couple months ago the guy asked if he could do the job that I was doing when I started and they allowed him to. He asked for a raise and they gave him one not long after he started that job. Now from time to time I do this job and I still have no pay increase so I got tired of this and asked for one. They told me they would have to think about it and about two weeks later they said they would give me one. Then I waited a few more days and they gave me a paper to fill out. It was a self evaluation paper. A few days later the manager finally talked to me for a bit about it. Now he has told me that he will get back with me about it in a couple more days and didn’t even say for 100% sure he would give me a raise or how much. The part of that I believe might be possible discrimination is that I talked to the other guy and he said that all he had to do was talk to our manager verbally and he never had to fill out any papers and they didn’t keep putting him off like they did me. Again, he is black and I am white. Also I was talking to one of the assistant managers about a raise to 7.50 an hour and she said that there is no way that I could get that much because I cannot get paid as much or more than a manager and the guy that got the raise is getting 7.55 an hour and he is not a manager or anything like one. Now our general manager is homosexual as well, I am not sure if this might have something to do with it or not. I always try to maintain a professional relationship with everyone at work as well as the general manager, but the other guy is always joking around and is more personal as far as having conversations and joking with the manager. I hear the managers talk about how poor of a job the other guy I am talking about does and they tell me that I do better than he does and so do some of the other employees. I know I do better than him. So I was wondering if this is worth taking to a lawyer or not? Should he have had to go through the same proper procedures and protocol as me? I think so. Thanks.
